How to choose a rear door or spare wheel bike carrier?

Rear door and Spare wheel bike carrier : The most economical rack for 3 bikes.
Characteristics:
  •   Need to check the compatibility of the product with your vehicle.
Advantages:
  • Good value for money,
  • The only solution if you have no tow bar or roof bar,
  • Aerodynamic and therefore less excess fuel consumption (+12 % for a Renault Scénic II),
  • Quick to install,
  • Ideal for occasional use,
  • Allows access to roof bars (roof boxes, ski carriers, surfboard carriers, etc.) and tow bar,
  • No height restriction (for toll gates and car parks) and does not complicate parking manoeuvres,
Drawbacks:
  • Non-universal product (check the compatibility of the product with your vehicle),
  • Depending on the vehicles and the products (except for raised models), does not leave the lightboard and registration plate visible (need to purchase a new registration plate - approximately 10 Euros - and a lightboard- approximately 20 Euros),
  • Requires purchase of a bike adapter for frames without crossbar,

Points to be noted to help you choose:
  • Compliance with new ISO standard 15 263 - 4,
  • Indication of adjustment for each vehicle,
  • 6 vehicle attachment straps,
  • Number of bikes which can be transported,
  • Anti-corrosion protection of metal parts (epoxy paint on arms, anti-corrosion treatment of fastenings),
  • Additional strap for bike attachment,
  • Choose frame locks for attachment of your bikes (independent attachment of bikes, quick to install) in preference to textile straps: note that the frame locks must be flexible for optimum protection of the paintwork of your bikes,
  • If the rear door of your vehicle has bonded windows or is made of composite material, check that the bike carrier includes a special kit, otherwise you will have to purchase one as an option,
  • Essential: protections for the paintwork of the vehicle in the areas in which the carrier bears on or is attached to the body. For bearing areas, choose rubber protections in preference to foam strips,
  • Foldable arms (easy storage).
Recommendations for use:
  • If the bike carrier does not leave the lightboard and/or the registration plate visible, it is compulsory to fit an additional plate (highway code).
